Background
LAND 4 LIONS PROJECT
Land4Lions is a multidisciplinary, land-based conservation initiative operating under South African legal frameworks to provide secure, science-guided habitat for lions.
LAND 4 LIONS = LIFE 4 LIONS
LION CRISIS
Wild roaming lion populations in Africa decreased with more than 97% over the last centuary - from an estimated 1,2 million to a current declining 15,000 lions.

HABITAT LOSS
Since 1900, lions lost 97% of their natural habitat range and are now extinct in 32+ countries! Wild roaming lion population numbers in Africa decreased with more than 97% over the last century - from an estimated 1,2 million to a current declining 15,000 lions
CAPTIVE LIONS
With approval of a new law by the SA Government aimed to close down the captive lion industry, more than 8,500 captive origin lions are facing euthanasia as the 'most viable option' proposed by the SA government.

EXTINCTION
Lions are currently listed as vulnerable on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. However, in some parts of Africa, lions are classified as 'critically endangered' because lion populations are still plummeting at an unprecedented rate. The IUCN predicted lion extinction in the wild in Africa by 2050.
The LAND 4 LIONS PROJECT aims to not only secure protected land for lions, but to ensure a sound record and biodata repository of the valuable genetic information and material of South Africa's 8500+ captive lions for at least future reference and possible research utilisation . . . READ MORE

LION CRISIS: SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa is home to thousands of captive-bred lions (8,500+), currently facing an uncertain future as the captive lion industry comes to an end.
In 2024, the government of South Africa, through the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, announced the shut-down of the captive lion industry with plans to phase out the whole captive lion industry.
While this decision represents an important step for wildlife protection, it also creates a serious challenge: thousands of captive origin lions will need a humane and sustainable future.
Without viable alternatives, many of these lions face euthanasia or uncertain outcomes.
All this initiated the establishment of the Land4Lions Project to provide another path.
Our Vision
To secure and manage protected land, large natural habitats, dedicated to the long-term safety and welfare of lions, where rescued lions can live in expansive, safe environments.
While all captive-origin lions cannot easily be released into the wild, they can live in large, protected conservation areas that allow them to express natural behaviors and live meaningful lives . . . read more
WHY LAND MATTERS
- • Lions are wide-ranging predators that require large territories.
- • Historically, lions once roamed across most of Africa. Today their natural range has declined dramatically due to habitat loss and human expansion.
- • Organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimate that wild lion populations have declined significantly over the past century.
- • Protecting habitat is one of the most effective ways to secure the long-term future of the species.
How YOU can Help:
Land4Lions invites people around the world to help create safe habitat for lions.Supporters can contribute by sponsoring small portions of land that will become part of a protected reserve.
Every contribution helps secure habitat that will provide space, safety, and a safe future for lions. You can:
- • Donate directly
- • Contribute by buying" ONE SQUARE METER of land 4 lions
- • Become an AFFILIATE for the Land4Lions Project
- • Become a Volunteer or Land4Lions Partner
- • Conservation-aligned management can occur
